ELLABELL ZOO
Equine rescue/retirement

WELCOME TO Ellabell Zoo. We are a small family run animal rescue dedicated to helping animals, birds and reptiles find loving knowlegeable home in coastal GA.  While we mainly deal with horses, we network with many other rescues and can help you find the right home for most any  of gods creatures.

Here at Ellabell zoo we take in horses, mules or ponies that are in need of rehoming. We try to reabilitate these animals and find them loving homes.  The animals that come to us are never sold traded or bred. We do our best to make sure that their lives are full of peace and love for as long as they live. Some of our animals go on to new homes as companion animals. Others live out their lives under our ancient oak trees, munching hay and napping in the sun.

Ellabell zoo has been home to almost 30 equines of all shapes, sizes and breeds. Most have come to us with some sort of health problem. Some due to old age, others just because no one wanted to takes the time to care for them.  Some live here for years and rest forever under the oaks.
Some we lose to soon, but all live in our hearts forever.

The people that adopt our horses must understand that these horses will alway belong to the rescue and must never be subject to another sale or poor treatment.  They go out on a lifetime lease and while they are hopefully a lifetime commitment they must be returned if they cant be cared for anymore or will be removed promptly if mistreated.

Our horses have special diets according to their needs, regular vet and hoof care as well as lots of love and petting. They actually become quite spoiled and pretty much decide for themselves what to do each day.  We try to have several large round bales of hay available free choice. as well as a assortment of salt and mineral blocks. The farrier comes every 6 to 8 weeks depending on the horses needs and usually after the trim the herd all have a round of wormer.

Because we are a private rescue and have not filed for non-profit status our rescue may lack alot of the improvements of a boarding stable. We maintain the horses and other animals on our paychecks and have very little funding to go on to home repairs and at times we must go with out to keep the animals fed. As you may be aware, hay prices in this area have more then doubled and hay at times is scarce.  When hay is hard to find we feed a mixture of alfalfa cubes, pellets or chaff depending on what is available.

Do to the increase cost of hay and feed we are going to have to charge a small adoption fee for the animals. The fee will allow us to provide more services and help for the horses.

There will also be a small nonrefundable  deposit when you fill out an application form. We have been holding horses for folks who are not following through on the adoptions.

We also ask that horses that are needing homes with us that are over 20, if posssible, make a donation to help offset the cost of the vet workup. approz $150.
DONATIONS OF HAY AND FEED ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

Ellabell zoo has also become home to Earl the llama. He was a product of downsizing the goat herds in the area due to the drought. Earl get along well with the horses and visitors.  We are going to keep him around as a mascot.
Earl can use a llama friend so if anyone know of a needy llama please let me know,
